The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) performs windstorm inspections in order to meet applicable building codes that can withstand high winds and hail. For homeowners that live along the Texas coast, their property must meet certain building standards to get windstorm insurance through the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA). Those that qualify for TWIA insurance must have properties in 14 coastal counties and in parts of Harris County. Homeowners in these areas may not be able to get private insurance that covers windstorm damage. They can get a policy through TWIA.
